The Juilliard Orchestra is the school’s major orchestral ensemble. Consisting of students from all years of study, it gives many performances throughout the school year in Alice Tully, Avery Fisher, and Carnegie Hall, as well as the Peter Jay Sharp Theater.
The Orchestra is conducted by Juilliard’s director of conducting and orchestral studies, James DePreist, and guest conductors, some of which have included Marin Alsop, James Conlon, Dennis Russell Davies, Charles Dutoit, JoAnn Falletta, Jahja Ling, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gerard Schwarz, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, and Hugh Wolff. Outstanding conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Roger Norrington, André Previn, the late Sir George Solti, and the late Leonard Bernstein have lead orchestral readings with the students in the past.
