Ana Maria Martinez

Grammy Award winner Ana Maria Martinez returns to Carnegie Hall for her New York Philharmonic debut to sing words sung by West Side Story’s “Maria” who was her childhood role model. Here she steps into her shoes for this special moment in time, “to celebrate the one who gave her life.”

One of today’s most sophisticated lyric sopranos, highlights of her 2007–08 season included singing the title role in a new production of Verdi’s Luisa Miller under the baton of Massimo Zanetti at the Opéra de Bastille; the role of Mimi in La bohème with the Houston Grand Opera conducted by Patrick Summers; a debut with the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg for her first Verdi Requiem conducted by Sylvan Cambreling; and a debut with the Orchestre de Paris to sing Bernstein’s “Kaddish” Symphony.

Ms. Martinez can be heard in over a dozen recordings, including Ana María Martínez—Soprano Songs and Arias, recorded with the Prague Philharmonia; the Grammy–winning Albeniz’s Merlin with Plácido Domingo; and the Grammy–nominated Bacalov’s Misa Tango with Plácido Domingo. She stars in the DVD Così fan tutte and the EuroArts DVD Spanish Night recorded with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

A graduate of The Juilliard School with bachelor and master of music degrees and alumna of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Martinez won the Pepita Embil Award at the 1995 Operalia II.
